Whether you're seeking a stroller to take on woodland walks or strolls on the main streets, an all-terrain pushchair with excellent maneuverability is the perfect fit. These types typically have big wheels and offer impressive suspension for a smooth ride over bumps and rough ground.

Many are suitable for babies and come with a seat that can be set flat or a newborn carrycot. These vehicles also have tyres that do not flatten, and are usually made of foam.

Suspension

A true all-terrain pushchair should have an excellent suspension that has been designed to be smooth and comfortable on rough terrain. This will make your child feel relaxed and at ease. The wheels should also be large and typically be puncture-proof to avoid damage from sharp rocks or sticks.

Some all-terrain strollers allow you to switch between additional tyres for different conditions. Certain all-terrain strollers feature an swivel wheel that can be locked to offer stability or unlocked to allow for greater manoeuvrability.

Certain all-terrain strollers have a lockable brake handbrake that is easier to reach by hand. This is better than an ordinary pedal on the handlebars. This is a fantastic feature to have in case you prefer to tackle steep hills, especially with a child in the seat and a lot of shopping bags stashed beneath!

There are many strollers that have excellent off-road capabilities, but not the ultimate. They also have large wheels and excellent suspension. These are often a bit less expensive than the more expensive full-on all terrain buggy options however they are ideal for excursions to the dog park or for short walks in the country.

Many of these pushchairs are suitable for babies from birth, whether with an infant carrycot or a baby-ready car seat. However, be  3 wheel buggy  that when it comes to pushing over dips and bumps, the seats won't lie completely flat. As per EU regulations, they are required to meet minimum requirements for reclined position of around 150deg. Graco has gotten around this issue by introducing a new 'comfitech in-seat suspension' which allows the seat recline to a more comfortable angle for a bit more comfort. This feature is available on the Lila XP All-Terrain Pushchair, which can be paired with the Graco Infant Car Seat to create a 3-in-1 travel system.

Seat

There is a broad selection of 3-wheeled all-terrain pushchairs, which offer a superb off road capability. These are ideal if you live in the countryside or regularly take a walk on uneven, rough ground. These are more robust and durable than a standard pushchair. They have special features, like big puncture-proof tires to handle the toughest surfaces. They are usually quite wide, and can be tricky to manoeuvre in narrow spaces or through aisles in shops.

The seat on an all-terrain buggy may be a parent or world facing and will grow with your child, from newborn to toddler (it's suitable from 6 months). It is equipped with 'never-flat' foam tyres that give a smooth ride. It also comes with dual frame suspension with luxurious padding, as well as a seat with great postural support. It also has a reclining mechanism, an extended sun hood that can be extended, integrated ventilation and a pocket for your smart phone.

Another option that is a great choice is the brand new Out 'n' About Nipper V5 Pushchair for all-terrain use that is a true trailblazer with an excellent suspension and tyres that are air-filled, so it can be used for jogging once your child is old enough. It's suitable for babies from birth and is compatible with an adaptor for the UPPAbaby infant car seat or carrycot (sold separately).

Many all-terrain pushchairs don't have a reversible seat, but the likes of the Oyster 3, Venicci Tinum and egg 2 do offer this option and both offer an excellent level of off-road performance, and also have a decent weight limit for a 2-year old. A lot of pushchairs are categorized as all-rounders. These include the iCandy Pear, Bugaboo Cameleon and a few others. They can manage rough terrain in parks and National Trust locations, but don't have the off-road capabilities as real all-terrain strollers.

There are also crossover models which are a fantastic compromise between extreme off-road and high street and are able to handle all terrains with large wheels and a great suspension, but they're built more like a standard pushchair with reversible seats as well as the option of a full carrycot and can be used everyday. Brands such as iCandy, Easywalker and Bugaboo have produced some excellent models to take a look at.

Wheels

If you live in a rural area or frequently take your child for walks over rough terrain an all-terrain pushchair becomes vital. These models have bigger wheels that are mounted on the back than traditional pushchairs, which enables them to deal with rough terrain better and provide a smoother ride for your child. Some also have a sturdy suspension and puncture-proof types to ensure they're safe for use on grass, woodland or forest paths or gravel tracks, as well as market town cobbles.

Some all-terrain pushchairs also feature an adjustable front wheel that gives additional stability when walking on rough terrain and on high kerbs. Some models have swivel front wheels which allow you to manoeuvre the buggy more easily when changing direction or turning corners.

Most all-terrain pushchairs feature air-filled tyres which offer excellent shock absorption and are great for rough terrain but they are more susceptible to punctures than solid EVA tyres used on city strollers that are light, therefore it's a good idea to invest in an repair kit along with a spare inner tube and pump alongside your pushchair. Some models come with foam tyres which are less likely to puncture, but may be harder to push.

The brand new Bugaboo Fox 5 is a good example of a pushchair that has both foam-filled and air-filled tyres, with a fantastic suspension system and large rear puncture-proof wheels that are perfect for off-road or running (once your child is old enough). This model can also be used as a baby with a carrycot as well as a lie-flat chair.

Another option is the iCandy Peach All-Terrain, which has large tyres and has one steering wheel at the front. It is not as flexible as the other strollers with all-terrain wheels on this list, but it can handle hilly terrain well and has a spacious one-hand fold that is ideal for long walks in the countryside or long journeys. It's also suitable from birth and has a huge sun canopy that can be extended as well as a number of fantastic features for parents including an easy-to-use brake pedal and a movable handlebar, as well as a large spacious basket.

Stores

For parents that would like to take their little one off-road, but aren't sure about taking on Ben Nevis, there are some excellent all terrain pushchairs that offer the best of both worlds. Choose a model that has good all-terrain capability, sturdy suspension and big puncture-proof wheels but designed in a more traditional pushchair style, with reversible seats and all carrycot options.

The UPPAbaby's bestselling Ridge all-terrain pushchair is a great example of this; it provides excellent suspension, a simple one-handed fold and a huge 10kg basket. It also has features for parents that are child-friendly, like an adjustable handlebar, a hand-operated brake on the right side and a large covered storage space. A hood that can be removed and then brushed down with cool soapy water is a handy feature that will help keep mildew and mould from building up.

If you're planning on driving your all-terrain pushchair off road, it's worth opting for air-filled tyres rather than ones with rubber grips. They'll provide an easier ride on rough terrain and will make it easier to navigate in tight spaces. If you are planning to use your all terrain pushchair for occasional jogging make sure that the front wheel is swivelable or has a quick release feature to lock it into position for better stability.

To ensure that the fabric is in perfect condition, ensure that they are machine-washed. If not, a spot cleaning with soapy water, warm, and some warm water should be sufficient. The fabric can be dried thoroughly outside to avoid mould or mildew.

The majority of our 3 wheel pushchairs are suitable from the moment of birth. It is recommended to look for models that have a fully lying-flat seat with a reversible backrest. This allows you to use the pushchair from the moment your baby is born until your child is around three years of age. Some are compatible with car seat adaptors when you're traveling with an all-three-person family. If you'd rather leave the car at home, there are some all-terrain pushchairs with a fixed front wheel that are ideal for casual strolling or light jogging like the Delta Special Needs all-terrain jogger from Delichon which is available in a variety of frame and canvas sizes to fit adults and children.
